What is V-Day?

V-Day is a global movement to stop violence against women and girls. It promotes creative events that create awareness, raise money, and revitalize the spirit of existing anti-violence organizations. Every year, productions of Eve Ensler’s award-winning play, The Vagina Monologues, are staged all over the world to raise money for local anti-violence organizations. On a global level, V-Day commits ongoing support to build anti-violence networks, from helping open Egypt and Iraq’s first women’s shelters to convening the “Confronting Violence” conference of South Asian woman leaders.

As the organizers of Taipei's V-Day benefit showings of "The Vagina Monologues," "A Memory, a Monologue, a Rant, and a Prayer," and "Until the Violence Stops," we are confident and excited about this movement's vast potential to send waves of change throughout Taiwan. Unfortunately, violence against women is an issue of great relevance here in Taiwan. Domestic violence alone is alarmingly prevalent. As recent as 2006, there were more than 50,000 cases of domestic violence in Taiwan; in other words, 150 cases happened every day. We are working in conjunction with local women's organizations to create a high profile, bilingual event that truly reaches every corner of the community.

2008 Taipei V-Day will feature two Chinese performances of "The Vagina Monologues," two English performances of "A Memory, a Monologue, a Rant, and a Prayer," and one showing of the documentary "Until the Violence Stops" (English with Chinese subtitles). All proceeds from these events will be donated to Taiwan Women's Link (TWL), Taipei Association for the Promotion of Women's Rights (TAPWR), and the ECPAT Taiwan. In addition, ten percent of our proceeds will be given to V-Day International, for its 2008 Spotlight Campaign: The Women of New Orleans and the Gulf South
.

V-Day Taipei is an annual celebration of the resilience of the human spirit, a solidarity party for all lovers of peace and fighters of violence, and was the first of its kind in Taipei from 2005 year. We hope to continue raising awareness and help end violence against women and girls in Taiwan. We enjoyed incredible success last year, and with your support, we are confident in its great potential to grow year after year, until the violence stops.
